Review – Pride and Prejudice and Zombies
Pride and Prejudice and Zombies just sounds ridiculous. Based off the extremely popular novel, Pride and Prejudice and Zombies takes the classic Jane Austen novel about tangled relationships in 19th century England and throws a zombie apocalypse in the middle of it all. It is a unique twist on classical cinema and on the zombie genre, that narrow minded viewers will find stupid.
The only way to watch Pride and Prejudice and Zombies is to accept the world that the film puts us in and enjoy the ride. This is definitely one of the funnest times I’ve had so far in 2016. The film does to a great job of merging the classical cinema with the zombie gore, making a happy marriage between two genres that couldn’t be more opposite. The action is fierce and exciting, featuring some well choreographed and cool fights. Lily James, fresh off the success of last year’s wonderful “Cinderella”, proves she has the acting and action chops to be a legitimate star in Hollywood. And, even with knowing the love story, I was invested in the growth of the characters and watching the relationships blossom while deceit and zombie wars take place.
The only thing holding Pride and Prejudice and Zombies from being great is the rating. The film was slapped with a PG-13 rating, which was, I feel, a studio decision to make more money by allowing the teenage demographic to buy tickets. What they should have done is made this movie a hard R rating. Show more blood, show more gore, show more sex. The movie does push the blood of a PG-13 film, but it’s not nearly enough for a zombie film.
Even without the excessive blood and gore, Pride and Prejudice and Zombies is still a fun and crazy movie that you just need to let happen and not overthink.
MY RATING – 3/4
